I'm in a rush, so I'll just mention this one:

Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth

This one is my fave stereo-to-quad experience yet.

A lot of the newer Beastie Boys stuff (Hello Nasty esp) sounds great through QS.

I should also mention the 2 DVD BB Anthology set that Criterion put out. I know the main stuff was re-mixed in 5.1 (which I don't have the ability to play yet) but alot of the alternate re-mixes, which I don't think are 5.1, sound really good through the QS as well. One of the Shadrach remixes puts all the vocals in the left rear. Weird. I almost wonder if it's Dolby surround, but I see nothing in the packaging mentioning this.

I made an analog transfer of the Doors' "LA Woman" dvd-audio (from the stereo outputs) to CDR mainly to play the album with all its extra pieces for my (and others') enjoyment at my store. It sounds rather muddy in stereo, but in QS mode it really comes alive - I dare say it's the best QS mix I've ever heard - very active movement.
Another stereo album on CD that decodes very well in QS is Paul McCartney's "Ram". The chronology of events seems to lend circumstantial credence to its being encoded in QS, as it was being readied for release in the spring of 1971, Capitol announced that its quad lp releases would be in SQ, and the lp was already mastered in QS. Why would a Capitol decision not reach them in time? Because the album was under the control of Apple, distributed by Capitol.

These'd be worth a punt through a decent decoder if you're into weirdness: (they're even good through a width stereo setup)

Julian Cope's Rite series: 'Rite', 'Rite 2' and 'Rite Now', his Brain Doner project 'Love Peace and F@#k', and 'Odin'.

Tangerine Dream's 'Alpha Centuri' and 'Zeit' (brilliant for ambiance)

Godspeed You Black Emperor: 'F#A#'

Rick Wakeman and the English Rock Ensemble: 'Out of the Blue' (excellent live album btw)

John Parish and Polly Jean Harvey: 'Dance Hall at Louse Point'
(my goddess with long standing musical collaborator)

Happy zoned out listening

Hey George,

Glad to see the lists are shaping up! Good job!

As for Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth, the decoder would be Sansui Variomatrix on "Surround" setting.

Here are some more, all Variomatrix on "Surround" setting:

Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates of Dawn
Pink Floyd - Saucerful of Secrets
Pink Floyd - Electric Moo (studio sides)
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? (funky soundstage, but great seperation and discreteness)

I've also found that Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy sounds great via simulated surround. The surprise here is that I find I get the best effect with my Tate in the SQ mode! This album came out in 1967, years before SQ, so it's interesting that it would sound best in SQ mode. Go figure.

Curses! I must be getting senile or something! Sorry about that guys. I think this list is going to have distinct possiblities!
For the albums I mentioned above, the decoder's Variomatrix in surround (I see a pattern emerging here! Many thanks also to former neigbour Ken for the loan of Sansui. If the old guy ever gets on the net, I'll tell him to visit us!).
A couple of others to be going on with (Thanks to Ken for suggesting I bring them round to try):
King Crimson's 'In the Wake of Posidon' is great through variomatrix surround.
Oh, while you're at it, you know that copy of Floyd's Pompii sessions you've got kicking around? Feed that through your variomatrix too. Not too sure about the dialogue sections, but the tracks are to die for.
Happy listening.

Here's three lp's that decode great in SQ mode:
1967 - The United States of America - Coumbia - CS9614
1968 - The Mothers of Invention - "Uncle Meat" - Bizarre/Warner Reprise - 2MS 2024
1969 - Aphrodite's Child - "666" - Vertigo - 838 430-2
I agree with Cai about early Zappa decoding through SQ. The albums above all have early radical studio effects that have all kinds of wild out of phase stuff going on. Uncle Meat has ridiculous amounts of multiple tracking as well as lots of studio effects. The United States of America is probably the first rock album to use synthesizers, stuff designed by the guy who later created the Moog, and the electronic sounds swirl around through the speakers. 666 pushed the envelope with intense sound effects and multi layered tracking. These albums actually sound quad, as opposed to being a nice surround ambience. I use a Tate, but these also worked great through a Pioneer SQ decoder.

I did hear that Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica does some interesting things through a decent logic SQ decoder. I haven't tried this one myself, but if you own a copy it might be worth digging it out to have a shot & see what happens.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Try anything that was recorded using "Q Sound." There are many newer albums recorded this way and I've heard several "quad" effects in both SQ and QS.

'Have just been informed by my Sansui owning friend (fiend? ) that it is possible to levitate after listening to 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' by Yes through Variomatrix.

>Another stereo album on CD that decodes very well in QS is Paul McCartney's "Ram".

--Has anyone here ever made a DTS or 5.1 cd of Ram decoded through QS(preferably Vario-Matrix QS)? I have got to hear this album in surround sound before I die ;)

Can anyone help me out here to get a copy of Ram decoded with QS? I have plenty of McCartney, Floyd rarities to trade with or I could pay you for your time and effort. Just want to hear Ram in surround. Drop me a line at [email protected] if you can help. Thanks

I will trade my services and perform a QS conversion of Paul McCartney's RAM in exchange for a mint copy of the DCC gold CD! It's the only gold McCartney disc I need to complete my collection, and this would be the best CD to do a conversion from.

I have all McCartney's DCC Gold cd's and what I did was made multiple copies of each one and filed them away since these can no longer be obtained. I wasn't doing it to profit from it but only to have backup copies and so I wouldn't have to play the DCC in the car or wherever and risk getting it damaged. I could send you one of these copies if you'd like?

I see what you're saying. You'd like an original instead of a copy. Sorry, my fault for not understanding. I couldn't part with my original as Paul signed it in '97 and Seiwell (the drummer) the following year. But I'll keep an eye out for one when I'm in the little indie stores here in the south.

I could still send you a copy and any other thing you might want. I have every available studio session material of solo Paul from 1966 until now.

Cool beans on the autographed copy! Heck, I'll do you two QS conversions for that one! Just kidding...

Um, yeah, I'm looking for the original. If you find one, please keep me in mind!

Try "Metamatic" (Virgin CDV2146) by John Foxx (of Ultravox fame) this CD/ LP sounds fantastic on my QRX-8001 utilizing the QS "Surround" mode.

Try it !!!

Just try it. Decodes sweetly, especially anywhere there's multi-tracked vocals, which is pretty much all over the place.

I wonder if the alleged QS encoding made it past the Steve Hoffman remastering (re: RAM). I have that CD, maybe I'll try it on my QRX-999!

:-jon

Okay, after months of lurking on eBay I FINALLY got a copy of the DCC gold disc of RAM for a decent price. I listened to it in its entirety the other night through my QSD-1 and it sounded so good that I listened to it all the way through a second time!

Yes, I would have to agree with others who have said this one sounds great in quad. I am almost inclined to agree that this is really a "hidden quad gem", although it could just be a happy stereo accident. This one is definitely next in line for a DTS conversion! :p
