I have had satellite tv for over 20 years, put up the first dish myself. But, due to increasing costs I'm thinking seriously of ditching satellite.
What I would use would probably be a combination of my Windows HTPC, broadcast tv, firestick, whatever is on internet. But I would need recording capability. I'm an early to bed guy and so the very few things I care to watch on tv I miss, although my wife has some wider interests she would like to peruse at her leisure (recorded).
(I have a Hauppauge 1212 DVR I used to use in Win 7 but it's too much work)
Is this doable in Kodi with a PVR without having to constantly futz with settings, something relatively easy to set up? My past experience with PVR's (years ago) was not very good-I'm sure they are much improved now?
Thanks for any help/ideas.

This is something that Kodi can do, but I’ve never done it. So I won’t be able to give specific answers. However:

I do use a two Kodi based apps to watch internet sports streaming from two AU providers (paid subscriptions) - One for Premier League and other for general sports like AFL (Aussie Rules), NBL, NFL etc. They work well and in HD.

I also setup a Kodi media player for my brother in law with a Kodi Netflix app. That works well too. I don’t know whether a PVR app could record that content, it may by protected.

I‘d start by reading this info on PVRs in Kodi:

Kodi works as a front-end to a back-end server, so you need to have a TV tuner somewhere on the lan. It's not as easy as using a win usb tv tuner, so if pvr is the thing you need better to have a dedicated device.

A physical tv tuner you mean. What about the TV itself or whatever source is feeding it? I just want to record what ever is fed to the tv, but on a schedule. Is it really still that complicated? I used to use an app in Windows 7 that had 3 virtual tuners but beyond that I don't really remember much.

Not a immediate task, that's why it can be less time-consuming just to get a standalone tuner with PVR and keep it connected on HDMI1.

Don't know if something like that can be good for you:

Take a look at some of these devices, FTA TV Tuners/PVRs in a box, you need to supply the storage, that you can stream content to over your home network. To many devices, PC, tablets, phones, media players.

Kodi can interface to one so you can integrate into a single media player to watch everything: TV, PVR (from SiliconDust), Netflix, Amazon etc (Kodi apps), MCH music, music vids and Movies from your own files on disc)

OK this looks like it will not only do OTA, but Fire TV as well. Now that is more what I'm looking for! I'm pretty sure Fire TV is going to be in there, but I also need to upgrade my old broadcast antenna, we got it used from a friend 20 years ago and who knows how long she had it. But I expected that...I'm only getting the local CBS and it's .1 - .2 side channels and I think NBC whereas I used to get all the networks strong. Just need another 80-mile capable antenna.
Sweet. I'm going to check when my current contract is up with Dish and we'll see about pulling it all together.

Thanks guys for the suggestions!
