There are two different decoding systems in the SM, my point it the SM was designed for QS so the design would have been optimised from the start for QS. SQ was an afterthought, they had to work around that. That would be one of the reasons it's was such a bitch.
It's was a bitch because Sq is hyper critical and easy to make it sound mechanical. Got it working easily, it's just maths but the hard bit was to make it sound right

With RM, a stereo channel imbalance affects all channels equally. If L is somewhat louder than R, then all 4 decoded channels will be decoded farther to the left.

With SQ, the front channel levels are affected more by a stereo channel imbalance than the back channels are. But an imbalance reduces the separation between the back channels.
