What's up with this? A new(er) quad reel deck? $10K?

Never heard about these things:

I don't believe that will play your analog quad tapes. I'm pretty sure that was a digital deck that competed with DAT or or something like the Akai MG1212 or the Fostex RD-8. IMHO the cartridge based systems were better for consumers which is why you seldom see the Nagras anymore.

Those Nagras were 24 bit when most of the others were 16, but that was still in the era when many commercial releases were being done at 16 bit. It would be more of a selling point now than it was then, but of course everything now is hard disc based. Tape is strictly for analog.

The tape head section isn't round just to make it look cool. I believe those units had rotating heads like a VHS deck.

You're right! I didn't notice that but it looks just like a VHS tape deck head! Strange beast. Sure looks sweet though.

Asking and getting are two completely different things.

Edit: I take it back. I looked at eBay completed sales and those are going for stupid money. I don't know why, but they are.

This auction has some great pictures for those of us who enjoy audio porn.

WOW! The winning bid on that one was $17,000!!! Holy Crap!

Yeah, I have no idea why. Perhaps they have masters in that format and have to get that deck to play them back. I really don't get it.

I liked that pic best too.

If you used this to record mix tapes, you would get clean results, but the spinning head would be short lived, like a VHS tape head. You couldn't play analog pre-recorded tape.
