Various threads mention that some record companies went back (in the early 1980s) and remixed their single inventory quadraphonic releases into stereo.

Why? - Were there complaints from stereo listeners about poor sound quality (imaging) from the single inventory quad content (it seems difficult to justify spending money and time remixing unless there were a lot of complaints)?

It would have been so much easier to just delete any overt mention of the release being single inventory quad matrix encoded, relabel it stereo and keep selling it.

EMI/ANGEL Records. And here's the "Full Poop" from Quad Incorporated via Larry Clifton, Spring 1985.
