What receiver is it? If there are no other quad modes except SQ, then that would be the only quad format said receiver could accurately decode, but SQ mode can sometimes produce interesting random results with stereo/quad recordings which aren't SQ.

To an SQ decoder, a CD-4 record would appear as a regular 2 channel stereo record and it would proceed to act just like it would with a regular 2 channel record. It would decode a QS record but not correctly.
