Anybody else see this article in yesterday's New York Times? When the writer says that "[t]he result is something like an enhanced version of surround sound," I don't think he's using the term in the way we would. But I don't see why these transducers implanted in a car's A-pillars and windshields--5, 8, or 10 of them--couldn't support 5.1 (or 7.1, or Atmos, or whatever).
