As usual, I'm the one who's different. Like ALL prerecorded popular media, mine are left (or top for tape) to right (or bottom) alphabetical by artist. Releases are latest on the left (or top) to right (or bottom) for the oldest release. Expanded versions go by the album's ORIGINAL release date, compilations are by the ORIGINAL release date of the compilation, NOT by the earliest release of a track on them. Soundtracks are grouped with the artist, shows are by show title. Classical titles are alphabetical by composer, or predominant composer.

They are segregated by GENERAL format. ALL surround digital media (Quad CD/DS CD/DTS CD/SACD 5.1/DVD-A/DVD-V music/MVI/Blu-Ray-A) are together. ALL Quad LP's are together (EV/QS/SQ/CD-4.) 2ch & mono SACD/DVD-A/Drool Discs are all together.

There is a rack in my main listening room with my top 450 CD's. My 100 fave box sets, and my entire Blu-Ray, SACD & DVD-A collections and my 100 fave DVD-V's all reside there. Like any playlist, it's always a battle to get there or remain there. The rest of the software resides in its' own room.

All mix projects and band master tapes are assigned numbers and categorized by those #'s. Those are shelved by like media (DVD/CD/Q8/8 track/7" reel/10 1/2" reel/cassette.)

Follow all that? You'll be quizzed later.

BTW: I originally segregated Q8's by label, but a few weeks into it, it seemed to make more sense to use the same system I used for other media.

Funny how all (or most) Q8 collectors keep them grouped by label (color). I guess we're all anal!@:

I think I'm borderline OCD. GRT tapes MUST be blue. The only reason I still have the two white ones is because I've yet to locate (or win) a blue version. I paid $90 for my blue Best of Mountain and later sold my white copy for $32. My RCA's are all later style Q8's not Quad 8's. I've traded/sold all those off. Two of my Elvis's are second-run tapes, but I can live with that. Columbia's in the 30xxx, 31xxx, 32xxx series are all small cartridge. 33xxx, 34xxx are large style, though there are a few exceptions that I would still like to replace. I wonder how many plants Columbia had for popping out Q8's? It seems that almost all in the 33xxx and up series are large style, but you do get a few sneaking through with the older style of cartridge.

All my A&M's will be blue US versions and I hope to keep them all small style cartridge. Trying to Keep my UA's all black if possible. etc...etc...

there are different styles of quad cartridges?? do they change the sound quality?

- I have seen different style of stereo tapes (I have two of the early stereo tapes- both have the rollers that turned into liquified tar!!!)

btw who owns the Q8 of the led zeppelin tribute band (someone on the forum has one I think) I wonder what company issued that release?

Yeah there are all kinds of 8-track case designs. I tent to like the bigger ones better. The smller ones tend to suffer from positioning and contaact issues. The ones that almost fill up the slot always seem to connect right.

Was there ever a blue GRT Q8 of Hooker's Never Get Out... or a Q8, not "Quad 8" of Nesmith's Loose Salute?

There are several that aren't in your collection that were only made one way so far as I know, RCA's that came with a full slipcover and the album cover only on the slip. I believe my Madama Butterfly is that way. Or, Liberty/UA's that only came in white with straight album art, rather than angled, like Best of Buddy Rich. I believe that Ahmad Jamal or Ramsey's Movie Album on GRT were only issued in white.

Years ago, I got outbid on a blue-shell John Lee Hooker, So they do exist. I have Nesmith's Loose Salute in Q8 - I have seen both Nesmith titles in both configurations Q8 or quad8.

8trackman: There are three styles of Columbia Q8 cartridge:

The early style: Two case latches, inverted speedbump on the top cover
The "mid" style: Similar to early style but with THREE case latches and no speedbump
The late style: Square, large style cartridge. Three latches, but the two back ones are inside the cartridge. (compare mid style latch to later "slot")

That is an impressive Q8 collection, Q-Eight! I sort my Quad LP's by format, label and number. Guess I am CDO, that's like OCD, but the letters are in order, as they should be.

thanks I never noticed those subtle differences, I need to check out what styles I have.

I've often wondered what I could get if I sold 'em all, (I could really use the money!) but I don't think I'd be able to get my investment back.

You could probably get a good price, but not nearly the price they would have fetched back in the 90's. Digital conversions have definitely impacted the value of our collections. Regardless, I can't imagine parting with my quad collection. http://keepontrackin.webs.com/quad.htm
I'll hang onto it and watch the value plummet right along with my Sirius XM stock. :) Seemed like a great investment back when I heard Stern was moving to Sirius.... Oh well.

I have been saying satellite radio was going to be short lived from day one. It was only a technilogical placeholder till internet radio becomes standardized in cars. (Which is finally starting to happen.) Stern is the only thing carrying satellite radio. I'm sure he will jump ship when it starts sinking faster.

The world should have listened to me ;)

I have SIRIUS, but only for Stern. And now he's only 3 days a week and ends at 10. If he bails, I bail as well.

As for our Q8's, I think they peaked around 2002. From 2000-2002 (the dawn of SurCode DTS), they were really rockin'. Lord knows I spent a ton on them, sniping away recklessly! :)
