Funny how big and bulky the Akai is for just flipping a cassette!
Wasn't AKAI the first to do the much smaller auto-reverse units?

Let's not forget the Nakamichi casstte flippers:

The RX505, RX303 and RX202. All three are auto reverse decks that flip the tape instead of the direction of the tape drive.

I didn't realize that auto reverse had a parent. I thought Nakamichi had come up with the flipping-the-tape idea afterwards as a 'better' solution.

What a cool thread! Those are some great looking beasts, that I wouldn't be surprised to see in the movie Brazil.But with all those extra moving parts I wonder how reliable they were.

I came close to buying the Akai GXC-65D. Reliability was my concern. I already had my CR80-DSS at that point. I decided to get Sony TC-161SD with it's soft-touch logic assisted buttons. It still works to this day.

What a cool thread! Those are some great looking beasts, that I wouldn't be surprised to see in the movie Brazil.But with all those extra moving parts I wonder how reliable they were.
