I went to a lovely concert of the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society this weekend where they played the Mozart String Quintet K. 516 and, a bit to my surprise, there's only one version of it in surround - on Tacet with the Auryn Quartet. It's kind of funny how recording projects play out - there's about 20 recordings of Mozart's clarinet quintet, and almost none of the string quintets.

It‘s not just with surround recordings. Mozart’s string quintets have always been in the shadow of his clarinet quintet and also his string quartets, especially the ‘Haydn‘ quartets. I remember I had to make a bit of an effort to find recordings of his string quintets, piano trios, and piano quartets back in the days of vinyl and CDs. Recordings of his late string quartets are also a little rare and personally I prefer them to the more famous ‘Haydn’ set. Brahms‘s string quintets seem to be in the same situation. Brahms’s clarinet quintet is much more popular. All these lovely chamber works are worth taking the time to explore.

Yup, they played a Brahms quintet as well, was a very nice concert. And fair point regarding the works generally.

Pentatone was going to issue the Grumiaux recording of the quintets, but the 4th was dropped from the release schedule, at which point they probably just dropped the whole project (more info here: Pentatone 2016 Remastered Classics Quad SACDs planned releases)

Yup, they did a whole cycle of them. Didn't know about it until I looked.

Yup, they played a Brahms quintet as well, was a very nice concert. And fair point regarding the works generally.

We are lucky to have what we have, I suppose. And it’s a delight to hear Grumiaux’s sweet tone in Mozart’s string quintets.

As for the clarinet quintet’s popularity, it is undeniably sublime music and a real jewel in the repertoire for clarinetists.

Today, I got an email from Berkshire Record Outlet mentioning, "257 Hyperion titles restocked" ! Kind of sounds like they remaindered off their entire inventory of optical discs. I am going to grunt through there, and make sure there is nothing I can't live without.

I've just finished decoding this SQ (Spanish) LP, of German/Spanish performed Baroque Choral music, that I'm really enjoying. I am impressed by the overall sound of this in SQ Quad with seemingly more than just "ambience" in the rears.

Here is this fellow Dave with some information from his CD. He mentions a "surround sound experience" at about 3:39 in, don't know how he's hearing that aspect of it from a CD ( I'm guessing he's just referring to the recording in the church as to being surrounded by the groups?) He also goes into the whole thing of placing "Biber" as the author even though it's really unknown just so it gets heard; not sure how I feel about that!



If any of you more experienced Classical folks know about this title, I'd like your opinions of it, as I'm really enjoying it.

Dave is one of those people you can't avoid if you are interested in Classical Music on YouTube. Sometimes a little of Dave goes a long way and other times he is very funny and yet other times seems to hit the nail on the head.

He does not like the multichannel experience and has claimed to have gone through all of it at a high level and just dropped back to a regular but very good stereo.

Remember that SQ is 2 channel compatible and that is undoubtedly how he listened to it. Even though he is waving a RBCD.

I just got the 2 Dutton Epoch Rubinstein Barenboim Beethoven Concerto SACDs, then I panicked a bit thinking I already had the music on Tacet Blu-ray but relaxed when I realised that that was Symphonies! Anyway the SACDs are pretty good and more 'surroundy' than the Tacet.

I just got the 2 Dutton Epoch Rubinstein Barenboim Beethoven Concerto SACDs, then I panicked a bit thinking I already had the music on Tacet Blu-ray but relaxed when I realised that that was Symphonies! Anyway the SACDs are pretty good and more 'surroundy' than the Tacet.

Thanks ubertrout, that's what I was looking for. These all look like more modern performances by different performers and locations. I believe I've seen a couple of these on the Atmos Apple Spatial thread; that I'll need to check out.

All I can say on my old 1978 SQ LP conversion, having listened to it yesterday cranked up on my main system, is that it has a wonderful spacious sound to it that reminds me of some of the 2L and "LOST VOICES OF HAGIA SOFIA - CAPPELLA ROMANA" type music where you really get a sense of the massive room acoustics; especially when the vocal's reverberance fades out into the church. Of course, this is only single level Quad compared to Atmos/Aero 3D, but I'd bet it would sound great in someone's system who had upper speakers and used something like a DSU.

Yes, I was surprised at that one since, at the time, I had never heard of Luks before. OTOH, I still prefer Savall on the Missa Salisburgensis.
