The latest batch of high end receivers and dvd players will NOT use the 6 analog inputs for surround sound (exclusively), but will have an exclusive digital connection. Units from DENON and PIONEER are already announced.
The current Pioneer Elite Receiver, the VSX-49TX will be replaced with the VSX-49TXi (exisiting receivers will actually be able to be upgraded), and the existing DV-47A universal player will be replaced with the DV-47Ai (no upgrade path). These units will have a digital i.Link connection between them to pass the hi-rez digital surround signals!!!
DENON will have their AVR-5803 receiver and their new DVD-9000 DVD/DVD-A player with the same type of "Digital Link" connection between them.
I am not sure if these links are compatible or proprietary, but this is good news for surround sound as a digital medium.
On the down side, these are all top of the line units, costing thousands of dollars, but that's where this stuff usually starts.
Anyone else hear anything about this stuff?
:-jon
PS - Bummer for those that bought a DV-47A (but only if you have a desire to buy a new high end receiver!)
