I've had fire devices with the freezing issue, and I doubt it's a hardware problem for how gradually it progressed, and how consistent it's been across multiple devices.

It's a simple case of corporate greed driving manufacturers to push out OS updates that work fine on the newer generation of devices, but bog down the older generation of devices, driving people to replace them before the hardware actually wears out.

I switched back to roku devices for basic TV streaming on bedroom TVs, and put a rather simple small PC with hdmi out on the home theater system. I have way more control over things with a PC than with some god knows what stick hardware with proprietary OS's that try to lock you down. At this point I have a firecube that does nothing but turns my TV off and on by voice command. I'm not sure how I feel about finding out I'm the type of person that will let amazon keep a live microphone in my living room to avoid the reach to a remote control to push a button, so I try not to think about it.
