"'Cause all we hear is Ghost Riders sung by Vaughn Monroe."
Vaughn Monroe - "Ghost Riders In The Sky"

Almost any Hank Williams is intense...I swear even his brighter songs, like "Jambalaya" have a dark cloud waiting in the distance to pour right down on everything.

Speaking of which, forgot Mr. Dylan's BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, an album of romantic/physical/emotional darkness and dissolution that nonetheless is sung by someone who had to survive, and wrote about it sadder if not wiser for the experience. Is anybody ready for something like that? It's all of a piece, pretty much a concept album filled with remorse and strength. Ends fittingly, too. Hadn't played it for years until tonight, easy to forget how effortless the flow is, how naked the emotions and direct the words are compared to some of the '60s masterpieces. Almost as if "To Ramona" and "Don't Think Twice" were updated via "Positively 4th Street" and "Just Like a Woman" as if history were somehow repeating itself (as life often does--same shit, it just hits you at a later age and you should be more ready for it than you are).

ED :)
