Recent methods for me:
Record via Audigy 2ZS/using NEO6: DTS features,
-then split into mono waves (not necessary:my preference)
-import into Nero SoundTrax/Wave Editor and modify

Rip CD using EAC
-import into Nero SoundTrax/Wave Editor
-utilize V.I vst plugins
-may also use Nero effects such as Surround Reverb

Take any/all of a series of 6ch wave files and burn to DVD-A for evaluation.
(hey! ....haven't made any coasters yet!)

Tried: Steve's Guide (on Doom9 forum) with the hope of converting to DD
so I would only eat CDs instead of DVDs, but, no luck with the AC3 encoding.

What low budget approach is successful for you? I'm old and don't write code
anymore so be specific.

To my mind, if you can write to DVD-A, then stick with it.
Grab yourself an RW disc to do test burns, and DVD-R discs are what? 33p each?
Thhe trick, really, is to get a pack of 5 RW discs.

Apparently, for the Carpet Crawlers track on the Genesis Videos DVD-V, Nick Davis used the V.I vst plugins since this was the only track where the multracks had gone walkies. The sound achieved is pretty impressive.

I'm currently using these plugins to convert a live stereo track (due to multitrack failure) for use in a DVD-V release for The Spencer Davis group. We used 6 cameras for the video capture, which I am also in the process of editing down (using Vegas 6.0). I would have loved the opportunity to have mixed this from the multitracks though, but I'm still impresed with the results obtained using the said plug-ins.

The V1 plugs are essentially Ambisonic tools.
They can be very good, I must admit - I used them once for a DVD-V soundtrack where the only Audio was in 2.0, but the director wanted 5.1 and did not have the budget for re-recording the entire orchestra.
V1.11 to therescue it was.

Forgot about this old post. What a difference 5 months make!
I'm not knocking anyone, I did use the VI vst's, but there are better things
out there,IMO. Ambisonics is not my favorite, but works well indeed on some
sources.
I now encode both DTS and MLP, depending on results and whether or not
I would like to have on-screen menus/slide shows/etc.
What a great hobby.

Boondocks, what "better things" are out there? What are you now using for 2.0 -> 5.1?
