Four Of A Kind... Not a bad hand!

What I find odd is these disks have the Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo banner on the top, but on Acoustic Sounds their picture shows it just being blank. How many sales do they lose due to bad pictures I wonder. Well, I ordered All Summer Long from Elusive.... last day of the 12% off sale. I almost went with the SHM SACD (which shows the banner) until I decided to re-check your picture.

This showed up today from secondspin.com ($12.79 plus shipping).. and it came with the slipcase!

I also recently purchased Bernstein's legendary version of Rhapsody In Blue, which I had on vinyl, and I love it. It's also a treat that Sony chose to add the Grand Canyon Suite which was not on the original album. Great score at that price! Hope you like it.

After waiting 10 years to get a copy, my most sought-after Japanese single-layer 2ch SACD arrived today: Romantic Warrior - Return to Forever. I mentioned in another thread that both Music Direct and Tower claimed to have it stock in '05. Although I ordered it from both, it never showed.

I've owned this on LP and the original US CD. Reminder to self: a/b the CD to SACD. This SACD is dated October 1, 1999.

Sonically, it sounds great. Better than I ever remember it sounding. Musically, it's also better than I remember. One of my best friends used to play this and Al DiMeola's Casino incessantly. BTW: he had h/k Citation 16 & 17, h/k Rabco turntable w/MC Ortofon through JBL L100's at that point. 320+ watts of goodness.

For a while, we used both as demo albums. Frankly, I was sick of them, even though this was my favorite musical genre in the 70's.

I'm just beginning my second spin. The first was through my preferred SACD player on my main system. It sounded a bit zimgier in the high end, because it's a Sony. I'm now playing it on the DVD-A/SACD player, also in my main system.

Fidelity-wise, it's as good as electronic keyboards sounded in those days. To compare it to the imaging of all-acoustic music or a recording 40 years later would be unfair. The album is self produced. Didn't notice an engineer credit. It was recorded at Caribou. In both the gatefold and on the back cover it lists Stanly Clark (sic) as an Associate Producer. IMHO, Weather Report albums at the time was better engineered and/or recorded. Yet, when the acoustic instruments are played, it sounds pretty good in both image and depth of field. Versus an ECM release, though, the fidelity would come a bit short. Most things would.

Musically, this record's a classic. If you like jazz fusion, you NEED this album. Medieval Overture was used in a commercial or two back in the day. Th entire album is pretty accessible, yet still has an edge. THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE ALBUM FROM THIS LINEUP. If you only buy one album by this aggregation, or a solo record from Chick Corea, Al DiMeloa, Stanley Clarke or Lenny White, this should be it. IMHO, Light as a Feather was a better RTF record, but it's a completely different sound w/Airto, Flora Purim and Joe Farrell.

There is a flashback for me... JBL L100's...had them back in the day...studio monitors too...brings back some memories:spot

First, we sold L100's, then those plus 4311 studio monitors. Same guts and enclosure, with radically different grilles. Later, it was just the 4311 monitors.

Sorry for the sidebar, we now return to SACD heaven..

Yes! What a brilliant record. This was the first I heard of this band and I was immediately hooked. Plus, back in the day you got a pretty good free woofer test with that sliding Moog bass note near the end of Medieval Overture, which slides right down to 27.5 Hz (musically it's "A zero"). Ohh yeahhh! :smokin

P.S. Come to think, the stereo salesman at the music store where I worked used this one for a demo too. Between this and the heartbeat on Dark Side of the Moon, he sold a few pairs of Ohm Fs!

I'll have to keep an eye out for it then! I heard Return To Forever's "Where Have I Known You Before" as a 17 year old at a party, never bought the vinyl, but spent quite a while tracking it down when it was eventually released on CD (pre-internet!)

Modest Mussorgsky:

A Night on Bare Mountain
Pictures at an Exhibition

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Rene Leibowitz (conductor)

AP has done a wonderful job with this one. Warm, natural analogue sound.
It maybe only stereo but the soundstage has good depth.

Hey, Lute, do you have the Maazel/Cleveland Pictures on Telarc? If you or anyone else have it on SACD AND have compared it in both performance and fidelity to the Leibowitz/Royal Philharmonic SACD, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I've owned the Maazel/Cleveland version on LP, CD and SACD. It is a very early digital recording.

Good luck! (y) (I've been searching without success for a reasonably priced copy for years.. )

A BIG thank you to QQ member jsulzinger for remembering that I was in search of Romantic Warrior and for packing it securely so that it arrived in one piece.

I'm surprised they parted with their copy.. but absolutely delighted for you Linda! I know this is one you have been searching for long before many of us here ever got into SACD etc :)

Yea, they keep shuffling the thread titles. Bored gorts.

Umm.. moderation is generally done with a very light touch round here compared to certain places I won't mention.. plus we should be mindful QQ now plays host to several key players in the surround mixing world and to be frank I imagine the levels of monitoring round here have had to be stepped up a tad to ensure we keep these respected pro's here and don't piss them off.. (I've heard bits and pieces here and there about the guy from Universal who was in charge of their surround releases in the States back in the day who was driven away..) I can't and don't speak for anyone but my own take on it is Jon & co would probably rather not have a repeat performance of that kind of thing..

..or maybe its just as simple as good housekeeping, I mean I'm off topic now so this will probably get moved or deleted and well whats wrong with that..

plus there are posts that have been moved to this thread that were previously erroneously posted in the MultiCh section of the board, I don't see what the problem is with any of that, it makes perfect sense, if you have a legit grievance take it up with one of the Mods, when I've had a problem or stepped out of line they have been brilliant in a one to one PM and everything got resolved swiftly and cleanly.. GORT-ED and SOR-TED ;)
