Yes, the silver front JVC's like 5456 have a CD-4 demodulator built-in. The all-black front models, which are the previous line, such as 5444 do not.

Wow. I bought the JVC-5444 back in 2007. Here we are 17 years later, and I still have it and use it regularly. I have neer opened it up or done anything to it, but it is still working fine in my garage driving four Bose speakers. I run it in SFCS mode exclusively (Simulated Four Channel Stereo) and it sounds very good.

I have a bunch of other quad equipment I have never gotten around to restoring or fixing up. I will probably be pulling it out of storage this year and either selling some of it or finally putting it to use.
