Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel had a big UK Number 1 hit in 1975 with "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)" and in the 80's he was set to be the 'Phantom' in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical of "The Phantom Of The Opera" and made a music video for the Phantom project before suddenly being unceremoniously ditched (something he was evidently none too thrilled about as you can imagine) and the role ultimately going to Michael Crawford instead.

Yep... Quite a shock

His band Cockney Rebel were breaking new ground in the early 70's when I first heard them on the John Peel show .
Their first album was an instant buy for me and I played it endlessly...such happy memories
This news is sooo sad

My first concert in 1974 at Southampton University. The debut album is still a frequent listen for me,.
