Copland: Appalachian Spring - Aaron Copland SQ W/7" rehearsal disc.
There are so many performances of this classic. But here, you have the Composer's take. The rehearsal disc has him saying "a little more pizzacado...a little more pizz..." Found this for $10 on fleaBay. Had it on 2ch LP w/7", CD and several other performances of it on LP and CD. Get it, you won't regret it.

Yesterday, I went for a wander and found a boxed, mint copy of the 4 lP set of Wagner's "Rhinegold" in SQ (EMI/HMV red label SLS 5032) for £1! I felt guilty (it was in a charity shop), so put a bit more cash in the collection pot. Tonbridge charity shops are great place to find stuff. I found a copy of Sibelius's 2nd Symphony in CD-4 and Holst's "Planets" in SQ (L.S.O./Previn) in one a while ago.

Alaric, who is the conductor on your Supraphon copy of Ma Vlast?

I have an american Turnabout 2 lp release of this work and think it may be the same performance released here. Dont have the album handy to check right now but I think the conductor was neumann.
But then again the Turnabout lp is QS, while Supraphons are always SQ....

Hi Jefe1 - it was Vaclav Neumann. I guess he was their lead conductor at the time. He seems to have kept good time and control. I still prefer Sir Malcolm Sargent's drive. I have both lps of his 60s offering (and on CD, too), which is amazing. Are the Turnabout albums QS or RM (I know that they are almost synonymous)?

Hi,
The Turnabout albums are done in QS. I might have twenty of them and Ive never seen any that's quad that isn't QS. Of course I now cant find my Turnabout Smetana album, it must be buried somewhere. I also think it must be a different performance than your Supraphon for why would the same recording be encoded into two different matrix systems for release? But until I find my copy I can't check this.....
Ill have to check out the Sargent performances sometime.

I still cant find that album but my memory is kicking in and now I am sure it is one of the conductor orchestra pairings that appeared frequently on Turnabout. This one would be Susskind and another one is with the Minnesota orchestra . So at any rate I am sure now that this is an entirely different recording from your Supraphon. But many of these Turnabout classical albums are good performances and a few are TAS listed so by all means pick them up when you see them.

And don't forget that several of the Vox/Turnabout albums were issued as Multichannel SACDs by Mobile Fidelity from the Discrete Analog Master Tapes. As you say, some very good performances.
4 of these SACDs are still available from Mobile Fidelity today. See http://www.mofi.com/category_s/1827.htm

Hi, you are right I did get a couple of them when buying from Tower records going out of business sale.

Also a few of the quad recordings were released on the DBX record format and sound great.

And the Smetana sacd in your link is the Turnabout recording I have discussed in another thread

I am sure that the Turnabout recordings must be different. They were all done when the Czech Republic was very much a tied down state within the CSSR (Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) and the Prague Spring had been washed over, long before the Velvet Revolution was even a prospect. The Supraphon recordings seem to tie in with this. Supraphon seems to have been independent until 2013 (still is but has a tie in with Warner). Being Czech, themselves, I guess they would have stuck with local orchestras and conductors. They certainly stuck with local composers; Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek, Martinu, etc.. They may have quite a large SQ catalogue. Strangely, Wikipedia seems to have quite a good but very short piece on them; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supraphon.

I would love to find the Malcolm Sargent "Ma Vlast" recordings in Quad - even if it meant changing my entire system, I would probably get them.

Enoch Light 4 Channel Stereo PR-D700 (EV-4 I believe) This is the "4 channel stereo" LP with the different color 4s and different track list that you never see. I find it odd because it was also pressed on a much more lightweight vinyl than its twin.

Enoch Light 4 Channel Dynamite (QS? EV?)

My 4 Channel Stereo is (I believe) QS - or it decodes nicely on the Surround Master.

4 Channel Dynamite is likely QS, but could be SQ or CD-4 :yikes.
The 2 copies I have are QS..Matrix nos in the run out are PR5068 QD....

Check the Project 4 discography out...

and this thread:

P.S. Both decode nicely on the Surround Master - like all project 3's.
