I have some very early RCA Quadradiscs, including the first two or three pressed, which I bought used, and they still are fine. I have played them several times and who knows how many times they were played and whether or not they were played on a quad system, before I got them.

I believe the idea that the improved vinyl compound for Quadradiscs not being used until later in the quad era, is a myth.

Looks like RCA developed a moderately more durable vinyl for CD-4 in 1972, Q-540 CD-4 vinyl was developed in early 1973 and then RCA developed an even more durable vinyl in late 1974.

Louis Dorren said that reducing the tendency of vinyl to have a static charge was very helpful in making CD-4 play back properly, disc wear was not much of a concern (Shibata stylus).
