I have some old four channel tapes recorded live with two surround microphones and a stereo mixer connected with three front mics ( L, C, R ) . The center mic being split between the left and right mixer inputs.
I revisited these tapes and came up with a way to recapture the front center signal from the L & R tape channels. A mono mixed L+R signal is derived and connected to my amplifier 5.1 center channel input. I have connected my Teac 3340 Front Headphone output to a pair of 220R ohm resistors ( in a Y configuration). Solder one lead of resistor to a 1/4" TRS phone plug Tip lug. Connect the other resistor to the Ring lug. Connect the two resistors together along with a coax cable center conductor. Connect the coax shield to the phone plug sleeve. Plug the other end of the coax into your receiver Center Input. My receiver is a Sony DA3ES, set to multi channel input 1.

The levels came out OK but could be adjusted on the Sony, if needed .
