Hi,
I have stumbled across some excellent Quad documentation from the BBC. They are as follows:-
(1) Quadraphony: Techniques involved in four channel recording and reproduction.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1974-26.pdf
(2) The subjective performance of various quadraphonic matrix systems.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1974-29.pdf
This article is superb. It explains how the BBC got the Matrix H name, and compares SQ QS with various home grown matrices. Interesting, for me at least, is the fact they used Sansui QSE-4 and QSD-4 encoder/decoders.
Quote:
Matrix Description
A The QS matrix (Japan)
B The 'SQ' matrix (USA)
C Logic controlled version of A (commercial equipment: quad. only).
Equipment No. QSE-4 and QSD-4
D Logic controlled version of B (commercial equipment: quad. only).
Equipment No. 4200 Series.
E A 'high-separation tetrahedral' matrix
F 'Symmetrical matrix: a simplified version of the BMX matrix
G A stereo-mono compatible matrix
H ' Hearing-properties matrix' : parameters optimised to exploit certain
restrictions in hearing acuity.
(3) Properties of Hearing related to Quadraphonic reproduction
http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1974-38.pdf
All the above articles are well worth a read.
