The new feature creates a sound field that spreads voices out like they're coming from the direction where a person's video image is positioned on the call. In doing so, conversations flow more like they do in person face-to-face.

i love all this technology and Atmos music is amazing but this makes me wonder maybe i've been using FaceTime wrong all this time.. lately its mostly been for drunken group chats with mates i couldn't see during lockdown and most of what was said was total balls!

Possibly a form of crosstalk cancellation similar to ambiophonics, which in its simplest form uses 2 loudspeakers and can give a very wide front soundstage.
