No English sources as of yet but:
https://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/23985117/A founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Ryuichi helped usher in the synthesizer revolution in Japan and worldwide. Post Yellow Magic Orchestra he worked on many film scores, such as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (in which he also starred), and The Revenant (which got Leo DeCaprio his Oscar).

His first “final album” async has two surround mixes, one live and one studio, and his true final album “12” has a streaming Atmos mix:

Very sad, but thank you for the information. Nothing in Japan Today about this. I have some excellent live performances of YMO with a young & captivating Ryuichi doing his best. I dread the day I hear Harry Hosono leaves us.

What a tragic loss. For the past few weeks I have been playing his music in heavy rotation. May he rest in peace

No harm done.

I recommend searching prior to creating a thread. That didn't work well for me on our old host. Now, it works very well, so please avail yourselves of this feature. It is especially helpful for obituaries. Simply search the artists' name in thread titles. Should pop up quickly. Mod staff will be spared much unnecessary work. Thanks, in advance, crew.

BTW: I was just in the middle of some long overdue posts in Quad Legacy Polls.

I have async surround (Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani), a fascinating piece of music, I'll have to try and give it a listen to tomorrow, RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto
That one is usually pretty spendy on the used market, though it's down below fifty bucks today on Amazon:

Coda (Blu-Ray or DVD) also includes a live performance of async with a 5.1 soundtrack. Buy:

One of my favorite surround releases, and a truly prized release in my collection. So sad to hear the news of Ryuichi's passing. His work will remain timeless, and his influence will be felt for generations.

Very sad news. RIP. Odd that it came so short after the passing of his former YMO bandmate, drummer/singer Yukihiro Takahashi, who died in January.

I just listened again to Async--a gorgeous album, and one of my all-time favorite surround mixes.
