Yesterday, moving some cartons, had a chance to see two copies of the same LP togheter: John Keating Space Experience.
One is a Venuezelan pressing, on Odeon orange label, other is a Spanish pressing, Odeon black label.
Had a look of the run-out groove area of both and... suprise: both copies had the exact same machine-stamped cat.n. on them, plus a handwritten specific for the local release.
It seems to me that EMI sent out stampers for the SQ pressing instead of a SQ encoded tape to use for the stamper creation.
Will be intresting to analyze various UK EMI quads released outside UK to see if this was the ordinary way of doing.
Some popular titles that fit in this category, other than Space Experience (here for a mexican release: http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHN-KEATING-Sp...iewItem&pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item1e5a5efb23 ) can be

Atom Heart Mother
Dark Side of the moon
Machine Head
Mandingo The primeval...

That will explain also why the Japan RM of AHM is a real SQ, since the stampers are a clone of the UK ones.

About this worldwide release, you have written ON THE MATRIX:
- UK and Venuezelan pressings: QAX-4502 - 1 and QAX-4503 - 1
- USA pressing: P Q AL 32382 - 1A and P Q RL 32382 - 1A
Can you check your Spanish copy MATRIX writting as on the Yugoslavian pressing it's written:
QAX-4502 - 1 and QAX-4503 - 2 wich I find quite strange

sometimes with titles that would have low pressing runs/sales..record companies sent out stampers already made, ready for pressing, instead of the tapes....happened quite a bit in Australia ....I remember mercury classical pressings with the mercury USA stamper used and at other times the local astor stamper used from a copy of a 2nd generation tape copy.....no prizes for guessing what might have sounded better.....The Byrds double lp was done that way...Sony Australia had no copy of the tape when Raven records wanted to do a Byrds compilation using a few tracks from it....because they had made all the Australian pressings from an original USA Columbia stamper.....same stamper just different vinyl...

It also makes sense when you consider how many tape copies you really want to make to send around the world, especially when the artist involved is not going to make the top 40...it probably saves time too..

EMI was also recording everything in SQ for a few years, but not telling anyone unless they bought a record marked SQ.
