It's not all that unusual, just ahead of its time and incomplete. There was a tray to load it into like a theft resistant stereo, and a home unit that had a small amplifier in it and 4 speakers came with it too. There was at least one or two other manufacturers that did this, but I can not remember right now.
Meh. Not that unusual. Panasonic series for use in home or car. There were other manufacturers that did this although Panasonic was one of few that had the deck slide into a home receiver. Many of the other's just had a home base with four speakers.
