As I have announced, here a short Report from the Funkausstellung in Berlin last week in August. In opposite to the CES the IFA is hold only each second year, but then bigger as other Audio-Video shows. By this occasion there will meet a few of the known fans of Quadraphopny - also this year. So we have had some discussions with commercial people.
Most interesting - of course - has been the situation of DVD-Audio and SA-CD. For DVD-Audio they have had 3 demonstration, for SA-CD 2.
Interesting was, that "modern" Audio-surround has more and more the
character of Quadraphony - most important the allround equal loudspeakers. And the spokesman by the demonstrations was astonishingly not puristic. They told (like us) the surround should have beneth live-recordings also a fun-factor - in opposite to earlier times.
May be, that this is also a result of our permanent shelling by the software-firms, that audio-surround is more then video-surround and - of course - stereo and has own artistic laws and expressing style - like Quadraphony. But there was also a lot of disappointment. The stubborn administration of the IFA exhibition has forbidden the selling of DVD-Audio and SA-CD (and stereo) software. So we could only view on walls, which titles will come in the future. So far the most interested themes. Other developments as HDTV we have also seen by demonstrations since years or cann be read in the hifi press.

Sony is introducing for the SA-CD a demo-stand with player and subwoofer in center front. Also in front in some high there are 3 little speakers (like Bose) and behind the place in a distance of 5 feet there are on horizental rods 2 more. Nice idea, but bad to listen a clear surround. Since a few days we can have here in Germany also the "Pet Sounds". O.K., ist sounds somehow surround, but clear quadraphony sounds better.
One of our fans here in hamburg has taken and combined the 2 stereo-CD's of a special "Pet Sounds" offer (one for the instrumental programm, the other with voices). That sounds some more like quadraphonic surround with clear separation.
So far the newest and latest from German or the "old" Europe. Dietrich
