Guess everyone's seen this SQ-W, but...

...if you haven't:

The Advert mentions that the power light doesn't come on; and it won't until someone replaces it! While you're in the case, consider a rebuild. I did a full caps (and power indicator;-) some years ago, which would indicate that an average Iron can. You will need a Service Manual, here:

IN terms of difficulty, on my AOL "Favorite Places" this is kept under the heading "EVIL," and I swore I'd never do another...but am currently doing my #2 unit, nights when sleep eludes me, with the idea of "blueprinting" it with much more exact value components. It is a great little decoder, although I cannot believe the prices they're going for.

Hello QuadonMotto.

Do you have notes for that?

I have a SW-W that I disassembled in order to simplify it's circuitry to make it a simple in-out SQ decoder. Haven't finished (huge euphemism) that project but would love to have the info about your rebuild.

Thanks in advance.

I cannot imagine such a terrible thing happening; if by "Haven't finished..." you mean that you have removed the case, scratched your head, and basically looked at it pretty hard, the best thing to do is try to put it back as you found it. I'm guessing it was functional when you started, or you wouldn't have considered altering it. Those ICs are just not easily had; for what it can be sold, you can get any number of "simple" decoders, one being on EBay, right now, for likely less than its shipping charge. Or breadboard a wall-wart powered, couple of chips decoder; the chips (NTE) are cheap as dirt (I was offering free ones a year ago) and everything else you probably have in your parts collection.

LOL!

It's not that serious. I know what to regarding the big picture (simplifying) but some support regarding capacitors and the such would be a plus.

I "just" need the peace of mind to move forward.

I had sold this "W" to him and I told him that the circuitry was fried. It looks like he is trying to sell it without disclosing the problems. It doesn't decode at all. Caveat Emptor(buyer beware)

Wow, well given the listing description he supplied, somebody got screwed! From his Ebay listing; I was told by the previous owner that this is a fully functional unit but I never got around to using it for myself and have lost interest in SQ, QS and CD-4 quadraphonic LP records.

I suppose the buyer knows how to re-wire and restore this or I am sure we will be seeing some negative feedback for the seller. There is also the possibility that the buyer doesn't know what SQ modulation sounds like? I wish there was a way to post on an ebay listing some comments. I sent him an ebay message stating that he wasn't telling the truth but never got a response and he did not post my message for all to read.
