The Resurgence of the CD?

With all the speculation about whether vinyl sounds better than cds I have wondered for years why a digital sound field wasn't developed by someone like Yamaha to try to emulate the vinyl "warmness" while playing cds. Maybe they did and I missed it or tried and couldn't do it. A sound field preferably without the snap, crackle & pop of vinyl though.

Funny thing is I can actually smell that through my computer monitor. The power of suggestion.
