I got that issue, and here is the scoop:
BILLBOARD “Tech Tr@ck” on DVD-A and SACD
(also posted over at Steve Hoffman)
In this weeks Billboard (5/1/2004) there is a section called Tech Tr@ck: DVD-A and Super Audio. From the articles in the mag, here are a few highlights:
DVD-A and SACD are registering higher sales each month
700 DVD-A’s are currently available
2000 SA-CDs are currently available
The DualDisc test market is still under evaluation
The DVD Plus format has been adopted by Rounder Records for it’s American Masters series of releases.
The Dylan SACDs have collectively sold more than 200,000 units in the USA
At the CES, SONY counted 118 SACD compatible players from 26 manufacturers
More auto manufacturers will follow Acura and put 5.1 DVD-A systems from Elliot Scheiner Labs (ESL) in their cars
DVD-A’s on the horizon are 2 Jackson Brownes (waiting for these for 2 years), 2 Frank Sinatra’s (Sept of my Years, FS and Jobin), R.E.M (Green, Out of Time, Monster, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up), Emmy-Lou Harris (Roses in the Snow), B-52’s (Cosmic Thing), Cars (S/T), Pink (Try This), Bonnie Raitt (Nick of Time)
(Nothing new here)
Sony “following the success of its 15 disc SACD set of Bob Dylan’s catalog is expected to produce remastered SACD series by other classic artists from its’ notable roster”
Universal thinks the DVD-A of “Tommy” has some things on it that “people are going to get very excited about”
Success of these two formats is “two or three years away”.
Those interested should check out this issue at their local library or Borders/B&N/Book Store.
