Films (Almost Entirely Surround)

I am fairly new to the surround sound game and I am wondering if there are any surround movies that have great surround sound. I am looking for movies that contain a lot of rear channel action. Most all of the surround movies I watch only have a few things in the rears. I am not partial to it being music or dialog just great examples of surround movies.

All Is Lost on Blu-Ray sounded amazing last week when I watched it. No dialogue (well, one word). Nothing but music and sound effects. Pretty effective mix. Oh, and the film is actually really great with a powerful performance by Robert Redford.

"Apocalypse Now" is the film that really began to shape modern surround sound mixing techniques for feature films, and the Blu-Ray release (which has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track) comes highly recommended!

Plus another great Blu-Ray release with stunning surround sound would be "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, in both its theatrical and extended versions.

And even though it might not be the greatest film in terms of a discrete surround mix, there is no Blu-Ray release of a film that I recommend more than the incredible box set Sony put together a few years ago for "Lawrence of Arabia". The video and audio quality are about as perfect as can be, and there's tons of extras for every fan of the film to enjoy.

Thank you dr simple. I ordered Star Wars Episode I this morning from Amazon on Blu ray. Yesterday I went to Hollywood Studios and rode the Star Tours ride for the first time in 6 months and they have changed the ride to update it to the Force Awakens by including new scenes and using BB8. So cool. It is my favorite ride at HS.

Thanks Simon A. I am a huge Robert Redford fan and I had been looking forward to seeing this movie. I ordered the Blu ray this morning from Amazon.

Thanks rtbluray. I ordered Apocalypse Now and the Lord trilogy on Blu ray this morning from Amazon. I have seen AN but I had not seen LOTR so I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone has been talking about.

I found the mix for the Last Temptation of Christ BD to be excellent. I'm a fan of the soundtrack and it sounds better nowhere else.

I haven't been to Disney World since 2002, and I just started planning a trip for this summer. I'm REALLY looking forward to the Star Wars stuff!

I hope you're not disappointed with the Episode I blu-ray. You know about Jar Jar Binks, right??? That pod race is the bomb in surround, though.

The Life of Pi sounds and looks absolutely amazing and is a film I look forward to upgrading in true 4K.....along of course with Lawrence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The Revenant and The Hateful Eight are also worth seeking out. Martin Scorsese's Hugo is also outstanding.

BTW, A GREAT THREAD. Motion pictures have some of the best surround designs.

The Three seasons of TV's Hannibal also had outstanding scripts, superb acting, surround sound design and cinematography, as well. A pity it was canceled! It REALLY pushed the boundaries of Network TV.

Independence Day is not bad either. (scene with the bullet shot at the space ship with shields on is great).
