NEVER one to pass up a bargain [$17.49], I watched director Jan De Bont's [Twister/Speed] THE HAUNTING [1999] based on the original novel "The Haunting of Hill House' by Shirley Jackson via SCREAM Factory's spectacular Native UHD4K transfer [HDR10/Dolby Vision/DTS~HD MA 5.1]. Via Scream's BD~100 disc encoded at a very high bit rate [in the 90's], I was in absolute awe of Academy Award set designer Eugenio Zanetti's incredulous interior set design!

The cast which consisted of Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta~Jones, Lili Taylor and Owen Wilson with cameos by Bruce Dern and Marian Seldes as the caretakers had one hell of a good time negotiating all the terrifying rigamarole De Bont put them through. While Robert Wise's original THE HAUNTING was an excellent psychological study in horror, this version was physical and unlike Paramount's original BD~V in 1080p, Scream Factory's 4K upgrade allowed one to see all the amazing machinations involved in this $91M production.

With music scoring by Jerry Goldsmith, the 5.1 sound design was immersiven enough to allow every nuance of the creeking house to seep through and the bass at times was overwhelming.

I haven’t seen this one but Lili Taylor is the best! Has she ever given a bad performance? Wasn’t she great in “Dog Fight” and “Six Feet Under”?!

BTW, MR. E, 1991's DOGFIGHT with another remarkable actor River Phoenix, will be released by CRITERION on April 30th

And not so coincidentially, SIX FEET UNDER was one of my ALL TIME FAV HBO Shows along with THE SOPRANOS and GAME OF THRONES!

Can't believe Dogfight is finally getting a Blu-ray release. This movie ranges across so many subjects, and nails them all: cultural transition from the fifties to the sixties, first love, the brief folk music renaissance, innocence and disillusionment, and a final scene that still brings tears to my eyes. River Phoenix and Lili Taylor are simply stunning.

Still have my old DVD copy, but this BD will probably be a first-day purchase for me.

Oh, and quite UNEXPECTEDLY, SONY PICTURES also includes the COMPLETE 22 episode STARMAN TV series in 1080p:

  • Starman: The Complete TV Series (HD) - Presented in 1080p across two 4K discs, Starman: The Complete TV Series is an unexpected bonus of the highest order. You can argue about the quality of the series till you're glowing blue in the face, but regardless of your opinion, the fact that Sony saw fit to include all 22 episodes here is worthy of some high praise. The series takes place more than a decade after the film, as Paul (Robert Hays) returns to Earth to guide his teenage son Scott (Christopher Daniel Barnes), dodge the relentless government agents hot on their tails, and find Scott's missing mother. It ends unresolved, cancelled before a second season could flesh out the MIA mom subplot, but it's still a mid-80s treat TV fans will enjoy revisiting.

My wife saw Ben-Adir on a morning talk show doing the mandatory publicity interviews.
The host asked him to repeat a line from the film in his Marley character voice.
To his everlasting credit, he politely declined.

'We will not accept fake patois’: Jamaican linguist on dialogue in Bob Marley biopic

Advisers say they were keen to avoid ‘another Cool Runnings’ in portrayal of Jamaicans in One Love

Kingsley Ben-Adir, who plays Bob Marley in One Love, says getting to grips with Jamaican patois was like ‘learning to play a part in French’

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2...can-linguist-on-dialogue-in-bob-marley-biopic

Farquharson believes the language’s importance is much more significant, and makes Jamaica distinct. “We lose our flavour without it, we become like everyone else. Everyone [in the Caribbean] has sand and sun, so what are you offering?” he said. “We have got to the point where we say: ‘Well, this is us.’ It’s the same as subtitling a movie in another language – give us the same sort of privileges, we will not accept fake patois.”

That attention to detail means that One Love will not be doomed to sit alongside Cool Runnings and How Stella Got Her Groove Back in the patois fail club, but has managed to reach the same level of linguistic authenticity as The Harder They Come, Perry Henzell’s 1972 gangster classic, renowned for its use of the language.

“I would say One Love is even more authentic than The Harder They Come,” said Farquharson, who remembers scenes in the Jimmy Cliff film where characters use more English than you might expect from underworld figures. “But here [in One Love], especially when you hear the band members speaking, you are getting authentic, authentic Jamaican – they went to town.”

My personal favorite reggae music film: Rockers, which was not mentioned in the Guardian for dialog authenticity.
