This flew under my usually reliable radar for all things Blu, music and 5.1. I "discovered" this the other day and found it available via Amazon for a very reasonable ($17.99) - it's a DVD/BD combo set. For those of you unaware, the Gotan Project has been around since 1999, playing a very cool mix of classic Argentinian Tango music interweaving chilled electronica beats and effects. Of course no tango music would be complete without the Bandoneon (the Argentinian accordion or squeeze box). No worries here, it's quite lovely, fits in perfectly with all the electronica beats and sounds very cool with digital delay effects.

The concert video, released in 2011 via Ybasta Records, is visually sumptuous with a 5.1 mix that is much more than your typical live concert fare - rears are used quite effectively with all sorts of effects from the violin, bandoneon and electronics often ping ponging all around the room - and not overdone. The sub is deep and warm without overwhelming the subtleties of the music. The instrumentation is piano, guitars (both electric & acoustic), trumpet, violin, harp, vocals, electronic keys/effects and of course the bandoneon.

I would highly recommend this - this is lovely music performed well before a very enthusiastic but polite audience. Gotan Project released an MC SACD several years ago of their second studio release, "La Revancha Del Tango" - I have a surreptitiously acquired DTS CD version and can only say that while the music is lovely the mix is quite conservative - no such worries on this Blu Ray though - a very well thought out and executed mix. Thanks for the heads up. I purchased the "La Revancha Del Tango" DVD by them that was only available through Amazon France at the time. I also have the SACD. I really like them, my wife and I used to dance the tango regularly when we lived in a city that had an active tango scene. She'll love this too.

Well I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. I think a lot of people are a bit averse to this type of music and understandably so - the Tango and it's music as portrayed in contrast to today's culture can seem dated and clichéd. The more adventurous here will be rewarded by not only an excellent surround mix but a very unique combination of traditional and contemporary music that walks the fine line of one never overwhelming the other. And for those that care, the visual elements of the live show are very entertaining - in a way, very similar to Kraftwerk's Minimum Maximum and PT's Live shows that feature creative use of conceptual film projections to accompany each song.
