Can I again ask for some knowledgeable insight?

I ran into an AV installer who is telling me the Marantz SR5014 isn’t compatible with managing Dolby Atmos overhead speakers.

To quote: “The 5014 does not seem to support Atmos, or have enough amplification channels for Dolby Atmos. It has seven amplification channels but Dolby Amos will require nine”

Claims the best the receiver will do is handle Dolby Atmos enabled height speakers.

Am I crazy thinking he is crazy or is he right?

I get that it won’t handle 5.1.4 set up but my limited knowledge thinks it could handle a 5.1.2 with two decent overhead speakers, not necessarily designated an Atmos Enabled speaker.

Would appreciate if someone smarter than I straightened me out by looking over the specs.

Thanks,
Greg

Well, you're right: with this amp you can power seven speakers and a subwoofer. You can assign the two "extra" speakers one of several ways--one of which would be a Dolby 5.1.2 setup. (The ".2"s could be Dolby-enabled upward firing fronts, front heights [i.e., overheads], or middle heights.) I think many of us who started with 5.1.2 and then upgraded our systems to accommodate 5.1.4 (or 7.1.4) were happy we did. But to my mind, 5.1.2 is still better than 5.1!
