with sticky ampex 456 you'd need a safety copy...and an oven for baking the tape..format is not mentioned ..wonder if it's the one track or a whole lp...and if it is the whole lp which version it is, as the 1980 reissue omitted the track "Sister Fatima"...the Ampex label sticker on the reel looks too modern to be a 1971 safety copy

and the American Pie lp was recorded at The Record Plant in New York City not at "a famous recording studio in Nashville"

Looks suspicious. And if it's a fake, quite sneaky. The auction title lists it as a Don McLean tape, it is listed as a Folk / Folk Rock tape, so clearly the way it is listed implies the tape is being sold as a Don McLean multi-track tape. Yet...by the wording of the auction description, it is being sold as a tape, with no promise or verification of the contents, that happens to come in a box labeled Don McLean American Pie safety copy. The title and category lists it as a Don McLean tape, the description lists it as tape being sold for reuse with no promise of contents. This person clearly wants to have his cake and eat it too. I would think that if this tape were legit, the seller would want to get the full value, and would go to a little effort to post a snippit of tracks being isolated to prove the tape is what it is. I dunno....may be the real deal, but I wouldn't put up any money to find out. Buyer beware.

Being a recording engineer here in Nashville myself for over 30 years, that tape box is 1990's vintage ampex tape...American Pie was recorded when?? 1972? I have Old Ampex 2" boxes and the artwork by ampex is totally different...And he says it can be erased and reused..Would you do that if you had the real thing or even a so-called safety??

By the way I love this forum and been a member for years and years and Thank u JON for your great work here...Just got the Reality Technologies Decoder....cant wait to hear it do its thing!

Well, a couple of things, first, I think you'd be hard pressed to find very many people with access to a deck that would play 2" tape stock. The last time I remember 2" tape was for video recording in television and that must have been in the 80's. I think the reason they are saying it is a tape that can be reused is to make certain they don't get flagged for selling copies of copyrighted material.
It would be interesting though to be able to hear what's on the tape.

There is no way it could be the complete album - one reel is 20 minutes run time at best, maybe just over 10 mins at 30IPS.
Perhaps it is the track - I am tempted to try it & see.....getting it transferred is easy peasy

If I had access to the playback equipment necessary, I'd be all over it. One dude retracted his bid, so it's sitting at $26.50 with a little over an hour to go.

Someone bought it for $255.88. Must have confidence in it for that price, since the description simply doesn't supply enough info into exactly what it is. Where it originally was found is beside the point, since tapes have a funny way of turning up in the damnedest places.

As 2 members have pointed out;
1- a 2 inch reel is 20 minutes tops at 15 ips, so only one side is there (Unless it was recorded on an 8 track machine)
2- the Ampex tape is one from the late 80's,cause that's the kind of box I used to deal with all the time when I was an engineer in that time....

Well, it's a safety copy, so it could be from any era. To my knowledge, I've never heard of this album being remixed, but I've heard the song(s) used in many movies.... and many times, movies do have the ability to remix for the movie as they see fit. Or for a documentary, or maybe a TV show....

Think I'll start a new ebay business that specialises in selling mainly mens clothing....then occasionally I'll throw in an old tape box and write rolling stones safety on the side.....
