American Animals (2018) Blu-ray:
1. Interesting true crime story. Reminded me of this book which is an interesting read about an odd bunch of hobbyists that make us hi-fi/surround enthusiasts look positively stock standard: https://www.amazon.com/Feather-Thief-Obsession-Natural-History/dp/110198161X
2. Some surprisingly decent surround moments, particularly with the soundtrack. Some songs sounded pretty discreet even though they may not have been. A few decent lows too, including a real room-rattler that seemed to make the top corners of the wall/ceiling intersection creak.
3. Worth a purchase I reckon, especially being so cheap. I got the Madman Region B BD but here's a link to the US release:

Actually, my dear Clement, I prefer Elaine May's A NEW LEAF over the regrettable mess that was Ishtar..........and I was always a fan of Mike Nichols and Elaine May's comedy routines.

I tried to like Ishtar, I really did especially considering it engaged the very talented Hoffman/Beatty duo. It has been universally panned by critics and public alike but as I sometimes do watch really BAD CINEMA late at night on Amazon Prime/Netflix, I understand Ishtar might have a place in the cinematic universe as a misfire rather than just a bad B movie......or C+!

screening the original--Nino Rota's score never sounded better . . . and Sonny's murder is cacophonous!

Jon Urban recommended MAKING WAVES: THE ART OF CINEMATIC SOUND which I had the pleasure of watching last night via Amazon Prime. While full of inaccuracies and eliminating vast amounts of technical data about the early origins of Surround Sound [akin to what Jon mentioned regarding Disney's use of FANTASOUND for FANTASIA] and citing Streisand's version of A STAR AS BORN as one of the first Stereo presentations........Actually when CinemaScope was introduced in the very early 50's, the inclusion of Stereo or rather three channel sound was endemic to the process.......it was an interesting watch.

Also, there was absolutely NO mention of early 70's QUADRAPHONIC SOUND for music and they kept referring to 6 track Magnetic soundtracks as DOLBY STEREO which I found odd.

Other than that, the video clips and sound demos were rendered extremely well. If you have Amazon Prime, by all means watch it.

You're probably right. Would love to see the NEW DIRECTOR'S CUT OF ISHTAR for a reappraisal of a film I haven't seen in years. Having perhaps much in common with another way overbudget production, Michael Cimino's HEAVEN'S GATE ..... a film, which upon initial viewing was tedious and self~indulgent but after I watched Criterion's fantastic restoration [restored from the theatrical 149' cut to Cimino's original 216' cut] a few years ago, I gained a new appreciation for Cimino's sprawling 'vision!'

EDIT: Regarding Clement's ISHTAR Post #1169, I removed the :( and replaced it with ...thus restoring Peace in the Valley🌅

My Heaven's Gate journey sounds the same as 4-earredwonder's. It got its hooks in me and gets a spin every couple of years. It really makes you feel like a part of it, like watching The Deer Hunter.
