Low data rate stereo MP3 encoding distorts the stereo signal such that matrix encoding is disrupted (I tried MP3 on several DS encoded CDs to verify this).

I suggest using a simple matrix encoding method (maybe DynaQuad, to provide just one surround channel, which can be easily decoded with a "speaker matrix") on stereo CDs, this would "add value" to the original CD because the surround sound portion would probably be damaged by MP3.

Unlike 30+ years ago, mono compatibility of DynaQuad isn't much of an issue because even the least expensive CD player I've seen has stereo outputs.
