If you want to hear how Pro Tools can be used to butcher fidelity grab some time with the new multi-channel Genesis releases. They have been compressed; limited to the point that dynamics are chopped off, and EQ has been applied the way you would expect a 12 year old set loose with Pro Tools for a lark.

I spent all of 15 minutes with 3 of the Genesis discs and sold them 3 days later. Pure rubbish.

As far as this sort of thing goes, better than Ken Russell's "Tommy" or the "Sgt. Pepper" movie, not as good as "Moulin Rouge" - not that that's saying much.

Backing tracks and arrangements (by T. Bone Burnett & group) are good enough - occasionally interesting. Vocals...well, they mostly stay in key...mostly. The faux-blues singer is annoying.

A 5.1 version of this would be lipstick on a housecat, if not necessarily a pig. Also, IMDB.com reports that most of the vocals were recorded live on the set - that is, what you see in the movie is the actual voice performance by the actor. Stands to reason, then, that there's not much surround stuff happening - more mikes would have left room for more mistakes. Probably just one boom or body mike.
