That is the preferred surround configuration championed by Wendy Carlos, putting them on the sides but nothing behind.

Buzzkill IMHO.... :smokin

Okay I'm totally pissed that BSM provided 4 tepid VINYL updates this evening and not a word about DVD-A! One new thread was like this:

"Hello all! How have you been? Please know, that your feedback is greatly appreciated and more importantly, know that we actually listen to and consider everything that you have taken the time to express to us... Your ideas for titles, formats and configurations have been great, please keep it coming."

So I just lost it as follows:

Weeks Go By; Where Is The DVD-A?
Submitted by DVDAWins on Fri, 07/27/2007 - 10:34pm.

Am I to believe that you can let this much time pass, with posts running 4-to-1 in favor of DVD-A releases and you STILL have not even one sentence share with us about DVD-Audio?

Hello, How we've been? Many posts make it clear how we've been left to fend for ourselves. We've been anxious for some news. Please tell us when we can expect DVD-A releases.

I'm so frustrated with this site's infrequent touch on the members and refusal to REALLY talk with us. ("at us" is easy - said the moderator)

Roll up your sleeves, it's going to be a long night. Readership down 80% in July who will actually see this? DVD-A fans chime in here.

Tim believes you are telling us to spend our money elsewhere

Thanks for the DVD-A solidarity; I can't believe this totally 2nd rate effort by what, the interns? Don't they seem like uninformed nerds?

You have to wonder if they got told no to DVD-A by higher-ups and just don't have the testicular fortitude to break it to us.

Likewise. Rickie Lee Jones' first is coming in remastered stereo vinyl, but not even a mention of DVD-A. Ouch, that one hurts.

Mark Z.

This is not even vinyl news since Elusive Disc has been posting about these WB titles for over a month. <yawn>

Oops! Ah well, news to me. I don't keep up with & don't care what's going on with new vinyl, there's so much clean used stuff out there for less money. (Though I suppose it's good that the folks buying them are listening to something other than MP3s.) Sure, a well done 180 gram LP may sound better on an audiophile grade system, but a decent pressing in nice condition sounds great on my equipment. Gimme something different, i.e. surround.

That title was done years ago by Mobile Fidelity, and superbly by Nimbus Records...now WB...that means now at least 3 different high end vinyl pressing runs for this title......be nice to do a dvda just to break the monotomy of it....it would at the very least be easier to press a dvda these days than a vinyl lp ...even if just a stereo one..

of course past audiophile pressings of this might wear out quicker than other titles, as I think alot of people would play side one alot more than side 2.

It would seem that it might be more productive to have different people post about DVD-A rather than the same few people repeatedly. How about some others posting there. Otherwise, it loses power.

I just send a PM to the BSM "moderator" as Sorry To Be a PITA But....

Not posting a shred of information of DVD-A news for people who've been waiting since January is frustrating.

Email response this morning:

Sorry about the spam and thanks for helping out.

It confusing to try and explain the lack of updates in general, dvd-a specific. Basically we should not have launched the site as early as we did, it's an on going process.

I do all the production of the music and site with one other person and have a very big, real job at wbr. BSM is a total side thing because of my passion for vinyl/sound.

The good news is that we are about to actually have full on details about a ton of super exciting things that will be coming out from now thru Xmas... But the dvd-a part of it is difficult, mostly cause with titles that have already come out on vinyl previously, we have the right to do, to do the same title on dvd is a whole new agreement with an artists, many whom are not any longer signed to us... That is a way over simplified version.

Good news is, I feel like I am gaining support in the catalog division and they are beginning to agree there is a real market ( although very small) for dvd-a.

I assure you, the site is going to become much more current and lively very soon...
Hope this helps a little with understanding our own issues.

Thank you for caring.

Message:

Good morning,

You have to realize how exasperating it is for us DVD-A fans to not hear
one single detail.

The msg has got to be clear now; It's just so irritating to wait this long
and not get some nitty gritty.

Your initial posts said "come back often" but short of masochism, I can
think of no reason. I'm just reminded of what I seemingly don't have.

I'm rooting for you, I want this to work! But we've got to have more
passion than this leave us hanging out to dry indefinitely.

Without posting DVD-A information, you are enabling the DVD-A naysayers on
your site. Do you realize this? Any news is appreciated

Thanks, Tim

PS - I was the one who tried every channel to get that viagra spam
removed; nobody that cares about the site should have to go through that.
At least now we have a contact we didn't before.

This does sound mildly encouraging but I'm still in a wait and see mode.

It's obvious this venture is small and undoubtedly difficult (and time consuming) to handle especially if these two people also have a "regular" job at WBR.

I see you have included this persons e-mail address in your quote. Hope this doesn't result in a barrage of negative e-mails to the guy.

I hope this all works out eventually.
Thanks for posting the note from Tom. At least we now know there are real people behind this.

Whether people use this email or address their concerns to grover on the site is about the same. But I'll make it a little less visible.

They can't understand why we're not responding joyously to the imminent release of vinyl records that there are still a glut of in most used record stores.

Here's a quote I used in my signature for a little while, I thought it was quite good. Maybe you should forward it on.

"Stop telling me that vinyl records sound warmer than CDs. I was alive in the '70s, you dip-shit hipsters. I know what vinyl sounds like. Scratchy. And when your friend throws you the bong and it hits the tone arm, your Foghat record is ruined, man! Plus, when you've got a chick over and you're getting your groove on, every 20 minutes, you've got get up out of the beanbag chair and flip over the Ray Stevens album."

It's from Bill Maher's New Rules.
