Hi... I know a guy who's selling a Technics SA-8500x, that he claims works.... along with that weird 'audioscope' technics made around the same time, a combo cassette/8 track deck, a pioneer cassette deck, 4 speakers, and a crappy cabinet for $150.

ASSUMING that this stuff all works, is this a fair price?

Also.... I'm not sure I want to dive into quadraphonics. I was basically looking for a big, badass reciever from the mid to late 70s so I could build a set of my own speakers to go along with it.... but now I'm not sure what to do. I'm aware you can use this receiver in stereo mode, but it's only 80 watts per channel. That really doesn't seem like much. Plus, would it do harm to the receiver to never use the 'quad' portion of it? I understand it's using all 4 amps...but... just wondering if a regular STEREO receiver would be a better idea for me.

ALSO, if I were to say... get a DVD player, and a dolby decoder, could I hook up the receiver to have 4 channels of audio from a surround sound source? I have a seperate amplifier that I was thinking about incorporating into my setup, but it isn't a receiver....

I don't konw. Anything you can tell me will help. I need info.

Thanks!

Seems good to me. The scope usually sells on eBay for $150, so the rest is a freebie.

The receiver probably has at least one 4 channel tape input that you could connect a DVD player that has 5.1 output to, however, you'll be missing the center channel and the LFE channel.

Okay. Holy shit. Glad I went. I pretty much made a killing. First off, all this equipment is fucking MINT. No scratches, barely any dust, no dings, nothing. It looks NEW. Even the speakers. The SA-8500x is incredible, the audioscope works PERFECTLY, it also came with a technics 4 channel 8 track player/recorder, which I ahvente tested yet but also looks mint, a pioneer super decent tape deck, a set of zenith quadraphonic headphones (bonus!), and four technics SB-550 loudspeakers.... they look pretty serious, again, perfect condition. What's even better is that everything not only works, it came with the manuals, warranty cards, even the card from the shop it was purchased in! Also, quite a few 8 tracks, a lot of which are quadraphonic!

This was the best $140 I've ever spent. I am fucking hooked.

I have a 350 watt 2 channel amplifier..... big sucker, forget what brand, but it's really tall, and really heavy. I was thinking about using that for the subwoofer and center channel amplification.

Here's the pics:

Cabinet of the speaker is GORGEOUS.... really amazing wood.

The SA-8500x with the 8 track player... I forget the model number. :p It's the quad one though.

Hi cash68.

I wanted to tell you that i own a technics sa-8000x and this receiver rocks. The one you have looks in very good shape . I was thinking for buying a 8 track quad like the one you have can you tell me if its any good . also do you have the joystick to adjust the rear channels ? . I here that that works well .

So how do you like the sound from your receiver . I have read that thats the bigest one that technics made ever and the best too. I own the one a step down and I must say for mine beiong only 16x 4 watts of power it rock the house , you never heared elvis aloha from hawaii like the way I heard it in quad for the first time it rock very well.

If you have any info on your tape deck let me no. hay by the way I live in appleton wi north of milwaukee 1 1/2 hour away . :sun

From everything I've read, the Technics RS-858 Q8 deck is one of the best made.... it has the features of other Q8 decks, but actually looks good doing it. :) Mine currently isn't working right, I'm going to build a crate for it, so I can ship it to some 8 track specialist in AZ. No, I don't have the joystick, I'm not sure it was available with the SA-8500X.

I love it. I hear a lot more with it than with a newer technics home theater receiver I had, or any other stereo I've had in my life. I've had a pretty potent PHILIPS system in the 90s with some big MTX floorstanders, and a pioneer home theater in a box, and a bunch of other misc systems, and this one easily sounds the best. All my cars had nice stereos too, and I just hear more detail with this thing, not sure why. And yeah, the 8500X is pretty much top of the line quad for technics....but in the stereo realm, the SA-1000 rules supreme. It was the biggest, most powerful receiver Technics ever made, and still fetches like $1700 on ebay, today.

excellent steal - those weird grilles are too sweet - protect that! sell the technics and go Sansui - QRX-9001, with a rebuild by quadbob - it will last 30 years and you dont know quad unless youre listening to a Quadbob Sansui QRX-9001 with better separation into 4 channels than any other stereo decoder - in a receiver - EVER.
IF I AM WRONG IM SURE POSTS WILL FOLLOW.
WILLY

Screw that! I'm happy with my sound, and there's not really a way you could pay me enough to ditch this equipment and go sansui. It sounds fantastic!
