The classic third album by the Moody Blues, 1968’s In Search Of The Lost Chord, will be released in a 50th anniversary deluxe edition on 2 November. It will feature bonus and previously unissued material and alternate mixes of this key recordin the group’s storied catalogue.

The deluxe edition will comprise a 3CD/2DVD box set with both the original and new stereo mixes of the album. Unreleased material includes a never-before-heard mono version of the Ray Thomas song ‘Legend Of A Mind,’ as well as a live session from influential Radio 1 DJ John Peel’s Top Gear show and another from Afternoon Pop Show. Mono mixes of the related Deram A and B-sides are also included.

The first DVD in the package contains In Search of the Lost Chord in 96kHz/24-bit 5.1 Surround, as a new stereo mix and the original stereo mix. The second, visual, DVD comprises BBC TV’s Colour Me Pop: In Search of the Lost Chord, broadcast on 14 September 1968, two months after the album’s release; Ce Soir On Danse: The Moody Blues, broadcast by ORTF French TV on 13 July that year, and Carte d’Or’ – ORTF French TV, from 29 October 1968. Both of the French broadcasts are previously unreleased.

The set also includes a 76-page book with extensive sleeve notes by its compiler, Mark Powell, as well as a generous selection of rare photos and memorabilia images.

The album is also being released as a standard vinyl 180-gram facsimile of the LP with the original packaging; D2C limited edition psychedelic coloured vinyl with original packaging, exclusively available from the uDiscover store; and as a single CD containing the new stereo mix plus bonus tracks.

In Search of the Lost Chord, based around the concept of the spiritual and philosophical concerns of the psychedelic era, is seen by many Moody Blues devotees as the group’s masterpiece. It featured the much-loved singles ‘Voices In The Sky,’ written by Justin Hayward, and ‘Ride My See-Saw,’ by fellow frontman John Lodge, among compositions by all five members of the band. The album reached No. 5 in the UK and No. 23 in the US.

I think the record companies realize that their relevance is coming to an end in the near future and are getting these titles out(y)

with you 100% on that Clint! (y)

now is the time!!

i guess we await to see who mixed it in 5.1, format/codec info on the DVD., etc.. but either way, very exciting times for us here!!! :QQlove

I always wondered why this one was passed over when they did all of them on Q8/Q4 in the '70s...and then again when they rereleased the quad mixes on SACD (this one was stereo-only). Maybe they just found the multis now? I too am curious who's doing the mix...

IIRC @rtbluray is something of a moodies fan...curious to hear his thoughts on this.

...now back to the D-V thread LOL

I'm a little confused....I have an SACD on this title but I never saw it released as a multichannel...and yet as I read the description on the set is doesn't say "new" when talking about the surround...just the stereo mix and the new stereo mastering...was this done a long time ago and just never released?

Ok, so I broke the DV news, and that’s good news and all, but THIS?!
This is bigger news for me than “Electric Ladyland”!

I LOVE the Moodies, and “Lost Chord” is an awesome album, so I say, BRING IT ON!!!

:)

Since you are a Moodies fan...do you think this is going to be a mix they already had? If it's a new mix it won't be Tony Clarke working on it as he passed away in 2010...he worked on a lot of Moodies material...any ideas?

It was an elaborate plan to distract you long enough so Adam could have the honors of breaking it...he even managed to bring some excitement over at the SHF...imagine that:whistle:

Pretty sure it’s a new mix, completed sometime after the SACDs were released.
It says the stereo remix is new, so they probably got completed at the same time.
I’m friends with Mark Powell on Facebook. He’s involved with the set so I’ll try to get some more info from him.

:)

This is actually the first real 5.1 mix from the Moodies....all past releases were derived from quad mixes done by Derek Varnals and Tony Clarke (credit to @fredblue's quad engineers listing https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/fo...-tribute-to-quads-unsung-heroes.21231/page-18)

From wikipedia:
In Search of the Lost Chord was remastered into SACD in March 2006 and repackaged into a 2-CD Deluxe Edition. Although the other Moody Blues albums released in Deluxe Editions in 2006 featured their original quadrophonic mix (encoded as 5.1 surround sound), In Search of the Lost Chord had never been released in this format, and a new mix was not released. In 2008 a remaster for single standard audio CD was issued with the nine bonus tracks.
