Very cool. Those came out when quad was basically dead, they were intended for home studio recording. Maybe they were cheaper than open reel or else were just more convenient.

Philips prevented the development/sale of anything like that (during the quad years) as it had to be compatible with all other cassette players. To be compatible it would have to have the narrow cassette tracks further split and would have to run at 1 7/8 ips, I don't know when/how that requirement changed.

If made available earlier perhaps a discrete quad cassette format could have helped to save quad?

Oh did I say that I love rack mount equipment!
