DROP YOUR WAD ON QUAD Chicago, Illinois
What are YOUR FAVE albums (up to 100), ANY audio format, mix or media, best pressing(s) available (with #). I've avoided compilations, except those where a large portion is new to that album (MMT & LITP). Here's mine, based primarily on the music itself, not the mix:

1- Moby Grape (1st album) expanded CD Sundazed SC-11190. San Francisco Sound issues sound muddy.

Five guys. They ALL sing, play and write. Four of the five play guitar. Harmonies to die for. Acid rock/country/folk/blues and balls out jams. Jerry Miller is among the greatest rock guitarists ever!
tumblr_maoebtzqhc1rp2ffko1_500.jpg

Preferred version: Entire album with extended intros/outros and studio chatter included on: Vintage 2 CD OOP compilation Columbia Legacy C2K 53041
vintage.jpg

2- 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus - Spirit Expanded CD Epic EK 65003 (with yellow sticker)

This group was so far ahead of its' time. Prog rock with a jazz and a poppy bent. Randy California was so good at guitar that he was in Jimmy James & the Blue Flames w/Hendrix at 15!! He couldn't make it to England for the Experience because Mom & Stepdad (drummer Ed Cassidy) wouldn't hear of it. Sadly, this was the original line up's swan song and it was masterfully assembled by producer David Briggs.

3- Blood, Sweat & Tears (2) QUAD LP OOP Columbia SQ CQ 30994 or Q8 OOP CAQ 30994

Some reviewers labelled this sound "bar mitzvah soul." Yes, it was commercial, albeit most innovative for its' time. Listen to the jazz riffs in the "middle eight," and you'll realize these guys had their jazz chops. I wore this one out before they got airplay and long before this came out in Quad.
QUADRAPHONIC-BLOOD-SWEAT-AND.jpg

4- Who's Next German CD OOP Polydor 813651-2 BLOWS away the SHM-SACD!!

If you haven't heard this one, brother, you ain't alive. The most bombastic rock drummer and Townshend expanding his genius after Tommy.
who's+next.jpg

5- Sundown - Gordon Lightfoot QUAD LP CD-4 OOP Reprise MS4-2177 or Q4 RSTQ 2177 OOP

A breezy, folky sound, updated for the '70's. The hits are FANTASTIC, but there are far better tracks here. My vote for the best Quad album.

rstq-2177-qf.jpg

6- Marrying Maiden - It's a Beautiful Day UK CD CBS 489449 2 OOP twofer w/It's a Beautiful Day (1st album) San Francisco Sound issues sound muddy.

Everyone knows White Bird, which is on the first album, also included here. Marrying Maiden was their best seller. Male lead vocals, female lead vocals, violin and Jerry Garcia guest starring. Folk/jazz/blues/rock/country. It's all here.

Linda, if you haven't listed them before, I'd be interested in seeing your full Top 10.

It's hard to pick them, but I tend to appreciate the ones that surprised me most. Those singular albums that popped into my life out of left-field and then never left. So when asked, I immediately name these two:

Maria McKee - Late December (2007)
Tears for Fears - Everybody loves a happy Ending (2004)

I highly recommend you guys check both out. They are excellent and few people know about them.

The new Whitesnake stuff (since their studio comeback in 2008) is amazing, too.

Smallcreep's Day - Mike Rutherford
A Curious Feeling - Tony Banks
Ricochet - Tangerine Dream
In Sides - Orbital
Claire de Lune - Tomita
Selling England by the Pound - Genesis
Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd

I'll never forget the first time I heard this album. Every time I played it after that, I was afraid that feeling would wear off, which it did eventually, but I loved it so much I was afraid to keep playing it!

Wow! I didn't think anyone knew this album existed! LOVE it. Great pick, Bright Side!

i'm one who never heard it or even know about existence, albeit back in 80th Tears For Fears were often played band in mine music library.
seems like somehow all of those 80th big acts quite fast faded away. at least didn't survived as much as 70th prog/hard rock.
