fwiw several tracks off "Fragments Of Freedom" do pleasantly Surround-y things when run through PLII, the Surround Master, etc..

What are you wondering about? They discontinued them (presumably due to poor sales). They never supported Atmos so not even sure what the relevance to this thread is.

It does support Atmos actually. Just the big one, not the small ones. The big one had an array of mics and it would do an echolocation ping to measure the space and could fake an Atmos signal. Obviously the more you had, the better the effect was. You can hook 2 or more up to an Apple TV and it will act as an Atmos setup, and the Apple TV even acts as an eARC bridge so you can use them for speakers for other devices.

Of course, yes this doesn’t really matter anymore since it flopped and they pulled it from the market.

The product designer left to make his own speaker company, inspired by the shape/design he was working with, but was re-hired by Apple not long ago.

It’s been rumored for a while that they intend to make a whole suite of new “Homepod” products based on the success of the Homepod Mini, with the current Apple TV 4K we all use originally rumored to be some sort of soundbar/Apple TV hybrid (which may or may not still happen… alongside a “refined” classic Homepod, and a Homepod with a screen)

Actually, I don't think that Beauty And The Beat is an upmix and I quite like it. True, it sounds quite dated to these ears, but there's an emotional value to the material at the same time.

I think once you get passed my lips are sealed it improves, We Got The Beat is very good.

Here's one last part of the DT Atmos fiasco that I've not seen mentioned here:

It feels like it's a 5.1 mix spread over the front wall and I'm listening to it from bird's eye view (if this makes any sense). But the SQ is all good.
