Who did the original version of Long Tall Texan in the 1960s? All I can find are cover versions when searching.

Must be a rather obscure group. Could find nothing about them doing a web search.

woops, I did find some after all..

LONG, TALL TEXAN
(Henry Strzelecki)

The Four Flickers - 1959
Jerry Woodard - 1960
Murry Kellum - 1963
The Kingsmen - 1963
The Beach Boys - 1964
The Englishmen - 1967
John Denver - 1974
Long Tall Texans - 1987
Lyle Lovett - 1996

Well, this is a tough one to figure out. I've found samples of these:

Jerry Woodard - 1960
Murry Kellum - 1963
The Kingsmen - 1963

None of these is the version I am looking for.

Simply due to their popularity, the Beach Boys version--not released as a single--has probably over the years been the most heard and recognized. Murry Kellum, though, had the 1963 'hit' version, but it wasn't much of a hit nationally. Not that much of a song, either, although it has been covered off and on over the years, so it has some sort of attraction.

ED :)

The Four Flickers did it first in 1957. Murry Kellum had a big hit with it in 1963. It was written by Henry Strzelecki. It was written about Tex Ritter.
