Recently purchased a "new" IPS monitor with VGA, DVI, RCA Composite and S-Video ports.

- Use the PC for photo editing and would prefer to connect with a DVI cable

- A Pioneer DV-45A has an S-Video output and that's all good.

- Want to use the RCA Composite input for a so far balky LaserDisc player

- Which leaves the analog VGA port for the Oppo and had been working great (and possibly should NOT have worked?), connected with an inexpensive HDMI to VGA cable, until things turned into a "no VGA cable connected" signal and no video from the Oppo.

The Oppo is now communicating via an RCA Composite cable and an HDMI to digital DVI cable has been ordered, but what may have happened to the HDMI to VGA output/cable/port?

Thank you!

VGA is an analogue format, and HDMI is pure digital, so your VGA to HDMI cable did the conversion from analogue to digital, but it needs power from somewhere to drive the circuitry. Most probably the VGA-HDMI convertor in the cable has failed.

A really inexpensive and simple HDMI to VGA cable. Based on what I have read, am surprised it worked so well in the first place and it certainly wouldn't have converted VGA to HDMI.

Just hope it is only a cable failure and that nothing Oppo or monitor have been effected. Thank you for the response.

HDMI is based on DVI, so that's the best way to go. Out of curiosity, why were you using VGA and not DVI? Limitation of an older monitor?

Monitor is also connected to a computer used for photo editing. Oppo HDMI to DVI cable is currently working, for now and hope it works longer than the simple HDMI to VGA cable did. A DVI to VGA cable for connecting the computer to monitor is on order. Will see how it looks...

IPS monitor has one each of VGA, DVI, RCA Composite and S-Video ports.
