At the recent Tonmeistertagung 2002 show in Germany for Recording Studio professionals, Sony & Philips announced that SACD Player sales in Europe had passed the 1 Million mark.

See the story on High Fidelity Review at www.highfidelityreview.co...r=12038027 for more details.

Brian,
i'm one of this million, but i'm also very aware of the fact that very few of them will be used for SACD playback - they are mainly dvd players and all-in-one systems. Will like to know the real sale figure of SACD-only player - i suspect is very thin.
Furthermore, (almost here in Italy) SACD software is very scarce *even* in the stores that carry SACD hardware. Been unable to see at all a copy of Celine Dion "A new day has come" anywhere - just listed on the flyer enclosed with any player... if there's no software, how the people is supposed to know the quality of the SACD sound?... All my SACD come from USA, they are all titles not available here...
...and also doesn't like some kind of cdr - the same that plays perfectly on my 10-years old Technics SLP400 and that has been used zillion of hours - and in all others cd-rom drive i have on several PCs.
In other words: if it wasn't for SACD, i would had NEVER bought a Sony (and it is the only Sony component i ever had on a system in 40 year).

PS: i don't mind the fact that the Sony players aren't easily "patched" for regionfree or that they don't convert NTSC to PAL - my player is connected to a audio-only system, for DVD playback i have a Chinese made that does whatever i need and works a lot better than the Sony.

My experience is that the 1 Million sold figure is a key milestone in any new format. There was much speculation in the early days of DVD Video on that format would hit 1 Million.

As for SACD, I'm told by some of the SACD labels here in the US that sales of their SACD discs started really moving this summer (June & July). I'm not sure whether that coincided with the release of specific SACD equipped products - or what we can attribute that to.

But it is encouraging to see the continued stream of good news on SACD from a variety of sources. And I suspect we'll see more soon as 2003 approaches.

Brian,
if it was that way, i can suppose almost *anyone* that bought a SACD player bought also almost 1 SACD disc.
Doesn't seems that SACD discs sold in europe hit the 1 Million mark.
As said, i like the sacd format - as i like dvd-a too - because i'm intrested in the multichannel format, but the Sony sales figure is just propaganda which doesn't show the right and true market of sacd. After all, there are hundred of dvd player that plays also mp3 format, but only a % of the users really use it. And MP3 is far more widespread than SACD.

Well, Sonopress announced earlier this year that they had made over 1 Million SACDs. And that doesn't include the SACDs made at the 2 Sony plants doing Single Layer SACDs, the Sony Japan plant that does both Single Layer and Hybrid SACDs and the occasional pressings from Philips ODTC in the Netherlands.

So it's pretty clear that the SACDs are moving. And from what I'm hearing from the SACD labels, the sales continue to increase.

The good news is that we are seeing more SACDs coming to market and more being announced. Good news for SACD fans to be sure.

Well, I'm happy to say that I will soon be adding to the SACD sales figures. I did it! I ordered that Pioneer Elite DV45A! Oooh, I can't wait. I should have had it sent overnite and it would be here by now.:rollin: Oh well, I can use the bucks I saved to buy an SACD or two. I await the happy day.

Congratulations on the purchase.

Let me know if you'd like some suggestions on some SACDs to get to play on it.

How much did it set you back and where did you get it from?
Are you going for the receiver to match and take use of the i link for DVD-a and possibly SACD / Multi Channel.
I posted a link a few days ago for a site with 6 or 8 of the players for $660.00?each and they also had the receiver for about 2,300. or so It's on my to buy wish list both and some new speakers and and a Plasma screen...... ! :rollin: :rollin:
Are you listening SANTA?

I got it for about $400.00 from Federal Stereo. I will be using it with my two Sansui AU717 stereo amplifiers that I bought during the quad era, and a third one I got much later. I did not order the receiver. Since I have not received the shipment yet, I cannot comment on the service provided by Federal. The DV45A does not have the I link. Since most of my gear is analog, I didn't need it. It will be nice to have all of the surround digital decoding in one box.

Wow nice STEAL! In your reply did you say the receiver or the player was NOT i link! The new Receiver was updated and has the i-link, which model were you talking about? Also I read that it may be used for sacd digital to the receiver! if this is the case, I'm getting one of each, this is a very nice system THX ULTRA d.t.s. 24/96 and all the ex/es formats and 7.1 this is what I want! This is worth the $ to save for !

The DV47A has the I link, the DV45A doesn't. I bought the DV45A. Since my system is mostly analog, I didn't need the I link. It's about $200.00 more for the DV47A. I received a disappointment today, when checking on my purchase. I discovered that they didn't actually have the player in stock when I ordered it. They said it should be in Monday, but they should have told me that at the time of order. I almost cancelled, and may still. I don't like being lied to. They claimed that they had it listed in the computer as being in stock. They should have called me and informed me that it was out of stock rather than let me wait a week just to find it hadn't shipped. Grrr.

Yeah, I know, but I wanted to get it from a dealer so I would have someone to hold responsible if it failed. My current DVD player had a lot of problems with bad lasers when I first got it, and because I went through a dealer, I was able to get them to fix it long after the warranty had expired. The particular model I bought had a bad run of lasers. Anyway, I just need to have a little patience.

Well, that dealer won't be Federal Stereo. I called today and asked them if the players were in. They said no, and I said that I may cancel the order. Then I heard "click" and the line went dead. I called E-Tronics and ordered it from them, and they said they had it in stock. I asked them to send one and they took the order. I called Federal to cancel the order, and the guy said to call back later "click". Another call got an answering machine. About 10 minutes later I called again, and I quickly gave them my order number and demanded cancellation. He wanted to know why and I told him. I also said that I had also ordered it from someone else and he wanted to know who. I refused to tell him. He said "OK tough guy, I'll take care of it for you" click. Some rude son of beeches. I am glad now that the order didn't go through. I would hate to have to get a problem resolved with these goons. I hope to see my player in a few days.
