for what it's worth I still have an email from QuadBob, wanting the unit to be sent straight to him to modify it ,because he thought it was vm and similar to a QSd-2

(no I didn't have it sent to him)

apart from that I've never pulled it apart to investigate and am yet to find any proper information on it anywhere
 
The X2 is Vario-Matrix - it's a "clone" of the D2 for the UK and European market and the unit the BBC modified for Matrix H decoding. The QSD-4 is the unit that the BBC tested and didn't like so much due to audibility of the Vario-Matrix - well, they liked it better than CBS's 2400 "full-logic" decoder, but not by much.
