You can get very good sound out of an LP, BUT you must have a turntable/tonearm with excellent bearings, stiffness and a very good cartridge and phono preamp.
I have those. I rebuilt the bearings in the arm (now ball bearing instead of sleeve) and have a good Shure cartridge. I designed the preamp myself.
And here is the amazing thing I discovered when I rebuilt it. The trip mechanism for the change cycle as provided in the original changer actually works with a tracking force under 1 gram. I am using a higher tracking force pickup mostly because I also collect 78 rpm records and need to handle them too.
