Maybe an all software implementation of what the high end AV receivers offer (AM/FM/HD/DAB radio), (DD,DTS,TrueHD,DSD,Atmos etc.), the only hardware would be amps for line level inputs and outputs for X power amps (such as the 6 ch. one from Involve Audio).

The software could be moved to another computer if the one it's running on breaks down and if a pre or power amp breaks down, it could just be replaced without replacing the entire "AV" signal processing system.

Of course, some signal processing software updates could be done (provided the computer has sufficient processing power).

Separates plus a disc player with analog outputs in addition to HDMI (like an Oppo) seems to be the way to go. Then if the AVR goes on the blink, you can still play multichannel music directly from the disc player into the amps while the AVR is in the shop (or trash.)
