I found this DVDA player (made in 2001) in very clean condition at a thrift store for $15, I was pretty delighted and tried it as soon as I got home. It had a slight loading problem which I corrected.
The problems: no internal DTS decoder, I would have known this if I looked carefully at the DTS logo, "DTS digital output" which in this case means nothing but noise on the analogs. No play of back-ups (DVDR). Discs I've made from my tapes will not play although they are fine in the Oppo 980 and the JVC in the car.
I don't know how or why, but it will play CDR fine and of course commercial DVDA & DVD discs.
If I hear from anyone who has this model Toshiba SD-4700 and it plays DVDR, I might keep it to repair, but it is very consistent with what it won't do, so I think it is going back to the store tonight. Luckily they have a three day return policy on electronics.
Oh well, I did have great luck earlier this year with an Onkyo surround that is fine as long as it has a fan on it, and a JVC DVDA changer (!). They live in the garage and power 4 Jensen speakers for around the deck.
